Sometimes, the simplest games become the most iconic. Dinosaur Game, also known as Chrome Dino or T-Rex Runner, is a perfect example. Hidden inside Google Chrome, this pixelated dinosaur has captured the hearts of millions around the world. What started as a fun Easter egg to kill time when the internet goes down has now become a symbol of patience, nostalgia, and the joy of simplicity.

The Origin of the Dinosaur Game
The Dinosaur Game was created by a team of Google Chrome developers in 2014. The idea was simple: when users lost their internet connection, instead of showing a boring error page, why not show something fun?

Designers Sebastien Gabriel, Edward Jung, and Alan Bettes wanted to give users a lighthearted experience. They chose a running dinosaur because it represented a “prehistoric” time — a time before Wi-Fi. In other words, when your internet goes down, you’re back to the Stone Age.

The game first appeared in Google Chrome version 39 and quickly became famous. What was meant to be a tiny offline game turned into a global hit, played billions of times each month.

How to Play the Dinosaur Game
The controls couldn’t be simpler, which is part of the charm.

On PC, press the spacebar or up arrow to make the T-Rex jump.
Press the down arrow to duck under obstacles.
On mobile, just tap the screen to jump.
Once you lose your connection, you’ll see a little dinosaur standing still next to the message “No Internet.” Press space, and the game begins. The T-Rex runs endlessly through a desert, jumping over cacti and dodging flying pterodactyls.

The longer you run, the faster the game gets. The desert changes from day to night, and your reflexes are put to the test as the obstacles appear more frequently. There’s no end or final level — your only goal is to survive as long as possible and set a new high score.
